Who Can Hire from Alco Van Hire?
We can hire to a wide range of drivers, but insurance terms vary according to age, driving experience, licence history, claims and other circumstances. The easiest starting point is to see whether you fall within our standard Normal Driver category.
Normal Driver
A Normal Driver is someone who:
- is aged from 25 up to 75 years and 364 days;
- has held a full UK driving licence for at least 24 months;
- has no DVLA-notifiable medical condition that has not been correctly notified;
- has had no accidents or claims, irrespective of fault, in the previous 36 months; and
- has no current points, penalties, bans or endorsements affecting the standard terms.
If all of those apply, our standard insurance terms and excesses normally apply. If not, one of the sections below may still allow us to hire to you.
Younger Drivers
Under 21: we cannot hire to you under our current insurer rules.
Age 21-22: you must have held a full UK licence for at least 24 months and it must be free from endorsements or penalty points. The current additional charge is £15 per day.
Age 23-24: you must have held a full UK licence for at least 24 months. Up to 3 points for an acceptable minor offence may be permitted. The current additional charge is £8 per day.
Drivers Aged 76 and Over
Drivers up to age 80 years and 364 days can generally be considered with prior insurer authorisation. Contact Us before booking so that we can obtain approval.
Under the current insurer rules we cannot hire to a driver aged 81 or over.
Less Than 24 Months' Full-Licence Experience
If you are aged 25 to 65 and have held your full licence for at least 12 months, we may be able to obtain insurer approval. Contact Us before booking. Younger drivers who have not held a full licence for 24 months cannot normally be accepted.
Non-UK Driving Licences
Acceptance depends on the country that issued the licence, how long you have held it, whether it is current and whether it can be readily understood. Additional identification and declarations may be required.
The nominated countries are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
If your licence is from one of these countries, we require more than 24 months' driving experience, a current licence and a licence that can be understood by an English-speaking person. An additional declaration is also required. If your licence is from elsewhere, Contact Us before booking.
Medical Conditions
If you have a DVLA-notifiable medical condition, the DVLA must have been correctly informed and your driving entitlement must remain valid. Tell us about the relevant circumstances so that we can satisfy the insurer requirements.
Accidents and Claims
Recent accidents or claims do not automatically mean that we cannot hire to you. We will need the date, fault status, circumstances and insurer outlay, and some cases require prior insurer approval.
- If you are under 25 and have had an accident in the previous 36 months, Contact Us before booking for insurer approval.
- A non-fault incident involving a third party where you did not have to pay your excess can normally be recorded without preventing hire.
- For a fault accident involving a third party and no injuries, we will ask for the total insurer outlay for your vehicle and the third-party vehicle. If that total exceeds £5,000, Contact Us for advice before booking.
- More than one accident or claim in the previous 36 months requires insurer approval. Contact Us for advice before booking.
- If you also have licence endorsements, we will need the relevant licence information & DVLA Check Code as well as the claim details.
Points, Endorsements and Convictions
Eligibility depends on the offence code, age of the conviction and total current points. Use the official DVLA service to check your record and, provide a DVLA Check Code.
