Hired a transit last weekend. I'd used Alco before many years ago and found the person I dealt with to be almost laughably rude and grumpy, but this time round couldn't have been more different.
The young man that served me was polite and helpful both at pick up and drop off.
My only gripe and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact that at the weekend you can't hire for 4 hrs. Due to pick up and drop off times restrictions, you have to hire for at least 5 hours which costs an extra £20. I'm not sure why, particularly when there is someone at the service station all day.
In short, a far better experience than before, but would have been better if it had been £20 cheaper!
Easy van hire - recommended.
Hired a transit van for one day. Seamless from start to finish and a very reasonable price. The van was comfortable and clean. Lovely friendly and courteous staff. Would not hesitate to recommend.
Brilliant experience hiring two vans over 2 days from Alco Van Hire. Efficient friendly service. Vans were available on time and ready for me to take. All the vetting, via application, was completed online prior to pick up which made the process so easy and quick, even when I arrived a bit early. I've had very bad experiences from one of the big van hire companies, twice. (The one that takes its name from Star Trek.. 🤔). I will only use Alco Van Hire now for all future van hire needs. Brilliant service and good clean vans
Great service in a convenient location just outside of Winchester. Great prices especially when compared to Europcar/Enterprise. Callum was especially helpful and always professional and polite.
This company is fantastic. Cheapest van hire we could find, great customer service and a proper family feel to it. It's a little rough and ready compared to some of the big chains but that just adds to the charm! Make sure you wear gloves (that are provided) when filling up at the pumps as some of them leak onto your hands.
Finally, we had to extend our van hire due to a failed completion and Alco was great at working around this despite the van already being booked for when we wanted to extend it to. Will 100% use again!

Possibly the cheapest place in Winchester to rent a vehicle. Once you have gotten past the uploading of files and documents via the email link (you can set up an account to save the effort for future bookings) the rental pick up is very straightforward and quick. The vans are all within a few years old so all the mod cons and comfort. All clean and good to go. When you return the vehicle, is it all based at the petrol station so handing back a filled up vehicle is not a problem, and the prices are very reasonable. These are my first choice for van hire.

A fairly straight forward process to hire a van and good rates of hire as well so that was a nice and positive experience.
The only things I’d say that were a bit negative are to make a note there is no out of hours drop off available. When we ask we were told we could drop the van off in the evening (closed from 1700) if we wished and then return the keys the following morning before 0830 as per the hire agreement. We turned up at 0810 and there was no one there. It was a bit disruptive to our morning plans as we had to return again after 0900 when they actually opened. These may be their standard Saturday opening hours but when we asked we were told 0830.
Secondly, we filled the tank up with diesel to return the van and filled with fuel until the pump indicated it was full, and also provided the fuel receipt as proof (as the hire company request). There was something wrong with the fuel gauge because it wasn’t indicating that the van was refuelled to full. When we explained we thought something was wrong with the fuel gauge we weren’t believed and they insisted on fuelling again. Managed to squeeze a whole £1.58 more into the tank which we subsequently got billed for as well. It’s not a big deal, just thought it was a bit petty when we were trying to be helpful customers and did everything the terms of hire stated we needed to do. Weirdly they didn’t seem to be bothered that there was something wrong with the fuel gauge either.
The booking process was good but the customer service lets it down a bit therefore sadly I wouldn’t recommend them and would rather pay a bit more for a better service.
Very simple process to hire a van. They also allow things like half day rental, which means you only pay for usage. Easily the best value for money in the Winchester area. I used a van to take some large garden items to the recycling centre.
Sadly let down by this company. Completely ruined my plans and those of others who were relying on me. I made the booking for a SWB Transit on the 12th June 23 and completed the insurance declaration as requested. At the time of booking I contacted Alco by phone and asked if my latest 23/24 Council Tax demand would be acceptable as proof of additional I.D. I was told by the lady I spoke to that this would be fine and then promptly uploaded the document. As I live in a residential park home, I do not receive the usual gas and electricity bills as they are paid for through the park. Today, after having been sent an e-mail confirming my booking, (also on the 12th June 23) upon arrival at Pittvale Garage, I was told that the Council Tax demand was unacceptable. I was badly let down and had to leave without the van I had already paid for at the time of booking. I sincerely hope I will receive the agreed refund of £59 I had paid, as soon as possible. All in all a very upsetting, distressing experience. Please consider the above before making a booking with this company and make sure you have all of your documentation agreed and verified before arrival. Being turned away by Alco Van Hire completely ruined the arrangements made for my day and those of others relying on my support.

Alco/ Pittvale Garage have since fully refunded me and have been more than helpful to rectify the problems I experienced. I have been a customer of the garage since moving to the area back in 2012 and have been a loyal customer, which is why I found the above problem so out of character. Open 7 days a week, family run, booking process is a bit of a faf, but the price off sets this. I used to use Enterprise, buy they weren't open Sunday or Easter weekend and I just needed a 1 day hire. Have used them twice now and have will use them again.

Very reasonable price for a days hire. Like the fact that, unlike other hire companies, you don’t have to leave a deposit. After waking up the morning of returning the vehicle to find it had snowed and made it impossible to get out of road. A quick phone call and they extended the insurance for an extra day at no extra cost. Absolutely excellent customer service. Will recommend to everyone and certainly use again!
