DVLA Licence Checks & Check Codes
We need to validate the driving entitlement and relevant licence history of UK licence holders. To do this we will ask you to provide a DVLA Check Code.
When We Ask for a Check Code
You must provide a Check Code before we can confirm your booking. A Check Code lets us view the driving-record information you have authorised the DVLA to share.
A DVLA Check Code is valid for 21 days and can only be used once.
How to Generate a DVLA Check Code
- Go to the official View or Share Your Driving Licence service.
- Sign in using the details requested by GOV.UK. The standard route normally requires your driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode on the licence.
- Choose the option to share your licence information.
- Create a Check Code.
- Save or screenshot the relevant driving record where appropriate, or record the Check Code exactly as shown.
- Provide the check code and record through your declaration or the document-upload route we have given you.
Video Guide
You may also find the following video helpful. It shows how to obtain a DVLA Check Code using the online driving licence service.
Older Paper Licences
An old-style paper driving licence issued before 1998 can remain valid, but the online DVLA record is still be needed and you must generate a DVLA Check Code. This is so that current entitlement and endorsements can be checked.
If You Cannot Generate a Code
Check that the details you are entering match the DVLA record. If you still cannot use the service, contact the DVLA using the current contact details published on GOV.UK. You can also Contact us if you need to understand what evidence we require for your hire.
How to Send It to Us
You need to provide the Check Code itself and upload the relevant driving-record document from the DVLA as part of your
Insurance Declaration. See How to Upload Your Documents for file and image guidance.
