Van Hire Insurance & Excesses
This page provides a summary of the insurance cover and excesses that normally apply when you hire one of our vehicles.
You should also make sure that you meet our Driver and insurance requirements.
When you hire from us you drive under the self-drive insurance arranged for the hire vehicle, subject to the rental agreement, insurer terms and the information you have declared.
This page is only a summary. The insurance terms, rental agreement and our Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions contain the full contractual provisions and take precedence.
Third-Party Liability Cover
Motor insurance covering the legally required third-party risks is included as part of the vehicle hire.
This provides cover for liabilities that may arise to other people or their property as a result of an insured incident involving the hire vehicle, subject to the insurance policy and rental terms.
What does the third-party cover include?
Subject to the insurance terms, it provides cover for liabilities arising from:
- Bodily injury or death suffered by a third party.
- Damage to third-party property and associated insured losses or costs.
What is not covered by third-party liability cover?
Third-party liability cover does not itself provide cover for:
- Bodily injury suffered by you as the driver.
- Loss of or damage to your personal belongings.
- Damage to or loss of the hire vehicle itself.
- Theft of the vehicle where the keys have been left in or on the vehicle.
- Theft where the vehicle keys have been lost during the hire or cannot be provided.
These examples are not exhaustive. Please read the insurance and liability provisions in section 25 of our Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions.
What Am I Liable For?
Standard third-party liability insurance is included in the rental price.
Your standard liability is normally £1,200.00.
Where you are eligible and choose to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver, the applicable liability can normally be reduced to £400.00, subject to the circumstances of the incident and the terms of your rental agreement.
Collision Damage Waiver
As with most vehicle insurance arrangements, an excess or other liability may apply if the hire vehicle is damaged or involved in an accident.
Some types of loss or damage have a mandatory excess and some are not covered at all.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is a contractual waiver rather than a separate insurance policy. It can reduce certain amounts for which the hirer would otherwise be liable, subject to the rental agreement and the circumstances of the incident.
The figures below show the typical liability levels. Your actual excess or liability may differ depending on factors such as:
- Your age.
- Your driving experience.
- Driving licence endorsements or convictions.
- The vehicle being hired.
- The intended use of the vehicle.
- The circumstances of any incident.
When might the hirer be responsible for an excess?
Examples include where:
- The accident is the hirer's fault.
- There is no identifiable third party against whom to claim.
- The other driver is uninsured.
Collision Damage Waiver Availability
Collision Damage Waiver is normally available except in certain circumstances, including:
- Drivers aged under 23 or over 75.
- Drivers with limited driving experience.
- Drivers with certain driving convictions or licence endorsements.

Damage and Loss Not Covered by CDW
The driver remains responsible for the full cost of losses or damage that are not covered by the insurance policy or Collision Damage Waiver. These include:
- Interior damage.
- Overhead damage above windscreen height.
- Under-body damage.
- Loss of or damage to keys and any consequential costs.
- Use of the wrong fuel.
- Aerial damage.
- Damage caused by roof racks or bicycle racks.
- Damage to front, side or rear lamp lenses.
- Damage to property where that damage is not otherwise covered.
Other Collision Damage Waiver Exclusions
Collision Damage Waiver does not cover all loss or damage. Examples of exclusions include:
- Interior damage, including cigarette burns.
- Damage occurring when the vehicle is not on the public highway, where excluded by the rental terms.
- Theft of the vehicle where its keys have been lost or stolen.
- Damage or theft caused by the negligence of the hirer.
- Damage caused while racing or while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Vandalism.
- Malicious acts.
- Circumstances where the terms of the rental agreement have been breached.
This list is not exhaustive. Please read the full Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions before your hire.
How Much Does Collision Damage Waiver Cost?
Collision Damage Waiver currently starts from £10.00 per day.
The actual charge depends on the vehicle being hired and the applicable eligibility and rental conditions.
CDW must be selected at the start of the rental and cannot be added retrospectively after the hire has commenced.
What to Do If Damage or an Incident Occurs
If the vehicle is damaged or involved in an incident, you must report it promptly and follow the requirements of your rental agreement.
If you are involved in an accident, call our 24-hour emergency number while you are at the scene and follow our Accident Procedure.
Failure to report an incident promptly or to comply with the requirements of the rental agreement may affect your insurance cover or financial liability.
Important
This page is only a summary of the insurance arrangements, liability levels and Collision Damage Waiver. Collision Damage Waiver is a contractual waiver and not a separate insurance policy.
