Driver Requirements
Every person who will drive an Alco hire vehicle must be approved before driving and must be named on the rental agreement. The exact insurance terms can vary with age, licence history and individual circumstances.

Can I hire a van from Alco Van Hire?
Most drivers can hire, but the applicable terms depend on age, licence history, driving experience, claims, medical declarations and licence country. See Who Can Hire? for the detailed eligibility rules.
What age do I need to be?
Our standard driver category is age 25 to 75, but some younger and older drivers may be accepted subject to specific requirements, additional charges or insurer approval. See Who Can Hire? before booking.
How long must I have held my full driving licence?
Our normal-driver requirement is at least 24 months. Some drivers aged 25 to 65 who have held a full licence for at least 12 months may be considered subject to insurer approval.
What licence category do I need to drive your vans?
Our current vans are up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight and require the appropriate full Category B entitlement. Check your licence if you are unsure what categories you hold.
Can I hire if I have penalty points or endorsements?
Possibly. Eligibility depends on the offence code, number of points and date of the offence. Some serious convictions prevent hire for a period; minor endorsements may be acceptable subject to limits and charges. Check Who Can Hire? or contact us before booking.
Can I hire if I have had an accident or insurance claim?
Possibly. We need the circumstances, fault status and insurer outlay, and multiple/recent incidents may require insurer approval. Please review Who Can Hire? and contact us before booking where required.
Can I hire if I have a DVLA-notifiable medical condition?
Usually, provided the DVLA has been correctly notified and your entitlement to drive remains valid. You must tell us about relevant circumstances so that we can ensure the insurer requirements are met.
Can I hire with a non-UK driving licence?
Some non-UK licences are acceptable subject to the country of issue, how long you have held the licence, its validity and whether it can be understood. Additional declarations or identification may be required. Contact us before booking if your licence was not issued in the UK.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit may be required where a foreign licence cannot be readily understood or where the applicable rules require it. An IDP does not replace the original driving licence. Contact us before booking if you are unsure.
Do additional drivers have to meet the same requirements?
Yes. Every driver must individually satisfy the applicable age, licence, insurance and document requirements and must be authorised on the rental agreement.
Do all drivers need to complete a declaration?
Yes. Each driver must complete the declaration and provide their own required documents. Use the booking reference and instructions supplied for the hire.
Do all drivers need to be present at collection?
All drivers should normally be present at collection with their original licence/ID unless we have specifically agreed another arrangement.
What happens if an unauthorised person drives?
This breaches the rental agreement and may invalidate the applicable insurance or protection. Only drivers authorised and named on the rental agreement may drive.
Do I need to tell you if my circumstances change before collection?
Yes. Tell us if anything relevant changes after booking, including your licence status, endorsements, accidents/claims, medical circumstances or intended use. Insurance acceptance is based on accurate information.
