Self Drive Insurance & Insurance Excesses

This section provides an excerpt of the cover of insurance that will cover you whilst you are driving our hire vehicle.
You should also check that you are able to comply with our driver requirements, which are detailed here.

You should be aware that when you hire a vehicle from Alco Van Hire you will be driving on our Self Drive Insurance, not your own personal policy.

Mandatory Third Party Liability Insurance
We are required by law to insure Our Vehicles against liability for the claims or actions of a Third Party(ies). Third Party Liability Insurance is therefore automatically included as part of Our Vehicle hire services and You will be covered for the consequences others may suffer as a direct result of Your actions whilst You are driving the Vehicle up to the level legally required.

What am I covered for?
You will be insured against liability for the financial cost of any of the following consequences that may arise as a result of an incident that You cause when You are using the Vehicle:

• Bodily injury or death suffered by a third party(ies); and
• Property damage sustained by a third party(ies) and losses and costs arising as a consequence of the damage.

What is excluded from the cover?
Third Party Liability Insurance does not cover:

• Bodily injury or death that you (the driver at the time of the collision) may suffer; or
• Any damage to or loss of your personal property or possessions; or
• Any damage caused to the Vehicle; or
• The Vehicle if it is stolen due to the keys being left in or on the Vehicle; or
• The Vehicle if it is stolen due to the loss of the keys whilst on hire or the keys cannot be provided.

What am I liable for?
You can choose your own level of liability, depending on the cover you purchase. Third Party Liability Insurance is included with the hire charges and is our basic cover. You can enhance this by choosing to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver.

Collision Damage Waiver

As with any insurance, you have an excess to pay in the event of accident or damage. There are some things which have a mandatory excess and some which are not covered at all. The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces some excesses payable by the hirer in the event that the hire vehicle has been involved in a collision with another vehicle. This is a contractual waiver that must be taken at the start of the rental period rather than an insurance product.

The chart below shows the typical reductions, but your actual excess may differ, depending on endorsements, driving experience, type of vehicle being hired and the intended use of the vehicle.

The hirer is normally responsible for the excess if:

• The accident is their fault.
• There is no one to claim against.
• The other driver has no insurance.

Collision Damage Waiver Availability
The Collision Damage Waiver is available to all with the following exceptions:

• Drivers aged under 23 or over 75 years of age.
• Drivers with a limited driving experience.
• Drivers with certain convictions or endorsements on their licence.

^ Vat or IPT at the current rates may be payable in addition to these amounts depending on the individual circumstances.

The CDW will not cover you for the following:

• Interior damage e.g. cigarette burns.
  
• Damage when the Vehicle is not on the public highway.
  
• Theft of the Vehicle when its keys have been lost or stolen.
  
• Damage or theft caused by the negligence of the hirer.
  
• Damage caused by racing or by driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  
• Acts of Vandalism.
  
• Malicious Acts.
• If any of the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are breached.
  

This list is not exhaustive, it is an indication of some exclusions and reductions you may choose. You must make sure you read the full terms and conditions; these are issued as part of your rental agreement.

The price of the CDW starts from £10.00 per day, but its cost depends on the type of Vehicle being hired and is only available to purchase at the time of hire.
